Gray Whale wind farms secure grid connection in South Korea

Corio Generation’s BadaEnergy portfolio, a joint venture with Total Energies and SK ecoplant, has reached a major milestone by signing a Grid Connection Agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This agreement ensures the connection of the entire 1.5GW Gray Whale floating offshore wind project to South Korea’s national grid, marking another advancement following the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment consultation for the floating wind project in July 2024.

Representing BadaEnergy at the signing ceremony on 10 October, Woojin Choi, Corio’s Head of South Korea, stated: “This agreement is a landmark achievement for BadaEnergy and underscores Corio Generation’s commitment to supporting South Korea’s clean energy transition. We are thrilled to take this step with our partners, delivering sustainable, renewable energy to the country and contributing to the development of the world’s largest floating offshore wind power cluster in Ulsan.”

Corio Generation is developing 3.2GW of offshore wind capacity in South Korea through two portfolios: BadaEnergy and Busan. The BadaEnergy portfolio aims to develop over 2.6GW of floating and fixed-bottom offshore wind projects, including the 1.5GW Gray Whale floating projects off the coast of Ulsan.

BadaEnergy is one of five developers in Ulsan to secure a grid connection agreement with KEPCO. Upon completion, Ulsan’s floating offshore wind cluster is expected to become the largest of its kind globally, advancing South Korea’s carbon-neutral objectives while fostering local job creation, supporting local communities, and strengthening renewable energy expertise through partnerships with educational institutions.
